WHAT IS SIBO?

Understanding SIBO: when digestion loses balance

SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) occurs when bacteria that normally belong in the large intestine begin to overgrow in the small intestine, interfering with digestion, nutrient absorption and gut signaling.

This imbalance can lead to persistent symptoms such as bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, altered bowel movements, food sensitivities, fatigue and brain fog.
In many cases, SIBO is not an isolated issue, but part of a broader pattern involving gut motility, the nervous system, immune function and stress.

At HOM, SIBO is understood within a whole-person framework, recognizing the close connection between digestion, hormones, immunity and emotional regulation.

HOW WE ASSESS SIBO

THE GASTROLYZER TEST

SIBO breath testing with Gastrolyzer

To assess SIBO, we use the Gastrolyzer breath test, a non-invasive tool that helps identify fermentation patterns occurring in the small intestine.

The test measures levels of hydrogen (and, when applicable, methane) in the breath after the ingestion of a specific substrate. Elevated levels can indicate bacterial overgrowth or altered fermentation dynamics linked to digestive symptoms.

Rather than using the test as a standalone diagnosis, results are always interpreted within an integrative context, considering your symptoms, lifestyle, stress levels and overall digestive function.

The Gastrolyzer SIBO test can be helpful if you experience:
  • Persistent bloating or abdominal distension

  • Gas or digestive discomfort after meals

  • Diarrhea, constipation or alternating bowel habits

  • Food sensitivities or intolerance patterns

  • Gastritis, reflux or upper digestive discomfort

  • Gut-related pain or pressure

  • Fatigue or brain fog linked to digestion

This assessment allows us to gain clarity and guide personalized, root-cause support aligned with nutrition, lifestyle and gut-focused strategies.
